C’est avec grande tristesse que nous vous annonçons le décès de monsieur Kevin Cohalan, survenu le 10 janvier 2026, à l’âge de 82 ans.
Kevin était un intellectuel, un bricoleur, un collectionneur, un passionné de littérature, et un ardent défenseur du patrimoine religieux montréalais. C’était un personnage coloré, un « hippie conservateur » avec un talent pour la répartie qui ne passait pas inaperçu! Grandi sur le Upper West Side de New York, Kevin s’établit à Montréal en 1968 et fut l’un des membres fondateurs de la radio communautaire Radio Centre-Ville. En tant que directeur du Centre d’action bénévole de Montréal pendant plus de vingt ans, il fut un leader apprécié de son équipe. Bibliophile, on pouvait le retrouver les dimanches matin pendant de nombreuses années à l'atelier de reliure La Tranchefile, concentré à méticuleusement restaurer des livres pour en faire des œuvres d’art. En collaboration avec le Comité des citoyens du Mile End, Kevin a initié le projet d’implantation de la bibliothèque Mordecai-Richler dans les locaux de l’ancienne Église de l’Ascension sur l’Avenue du Parc. Membre actif de la Société d’histoire du Plateau-Mont-Royal, on lui a décerné le Prix Action Bénévole en 2022.
Pour sa famille, qui lui était chère, il était époux, père et grand-père (« Pop »). Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse, Suzanne Perron; ses enfants Jean-Michel (Amanda Beattie), Louis (Jacqui Whiting) et Claire (Patrick Rogers); ses petits-enfants Rémi, Noah, Georgia, Henri, Elsie, Gabriel, Benoît et Sophie; ses beaux-frères Perron, Paul (Francine, feue Michèle), Art (Nicole), feu Bob (feue Linda), Michel (Rita), et leurs enfants; ainsi que plusieurs cousins et cousines new-yorkais.
Une célébration de sa vie sera organisée en été 2026. Pour ceux et celles qui désirent en être avisés, prière de laisser vos coordonnées dans votre message de condoléances.
La famille tient à remercier le CHUM pour les excellents soins qu’il a reçu ces dernières années, ainsi que les membres de l’équipe de Soutien à domicile du CLSC de St-Louis-Du-Parc.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kevin Cohalan on January 10th, 2026, at the age of 82.
Kevin was a man of many hats. An intellectual with a great love of literature, he was also a collector, a skilled craftsman, and an ardent defender of Montreal’s religious heritage. He had a quick and colourful repartee, and never mainstream, was known for his unconventional take on most things. Raised in New York’s Upper West Side, Kevin came to Montreal in 1968 and was a founding member of the community radio station Radio Centre-Ville. For over twenty years, he was an appreciated director of the Montreal Volunteer Bureau. As an avid bibliophile, he could be found every Sunday morning for many years at La Tranchefile bookbinding workshop meticulously restoring old books into true works of art. In collaboration with the Mile End Citizens’ Committee, Kevin initiated the project to establish the Mordecai-Richler library in the old Church of the Ascension on Parc Avenue. As an active member of the Societé d’histoire du Plateau-Mont-Royal, he was awarded the Prix Action Bénévole in 2022.
A family man, Kevin was husband, father, and grandfather “Pop”. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Suzanne Perron; his children, Jean-Michel (Amanda Beattie), Louis (Jacqui Whiting), and Claire (Patrick Rogers); his grandchildren Rémi, Noah, Georgia, Henri, Elsie, Gabriel, Benoît, and Sophie; his Perron in-laws, Paul (Francine, Michèle d.), Art (Nicole), Bob d. (Linda d.), Michel (Rita), and their children; as well as by many New York cousins.
The family will hold a commemoration ceremony this summer. We ask those who wish to be notified of the event to please indicate this and leave their coordinates with their condolences.
We extend our greatest thanks to the staff at the CHUM hospital center which provided such excellent care over the last few years and also to the home care team at the CLSC St-Louis-Du-Parc. The professionalism and compassion that Kevin and our family encountered was exceptional.
